The Green Team

The Green Team runs community events focused on gardening, sustainability, recycling and zero-waste initiatives. They work in partnership with the Springhurst Outdoor Classroom & Garden to support students as they learn about growing organic food and eating a healthy diet.

The Green Team also supports implementing zero-waste events for the PTSA. Read on for the various programs this dedicated group does throughout the year and email greenteam.dfptsa@gmail.com to join or to volunteer. Helping out planet has never been easier - or more important.

Programs & Events

  • October 2024: Soup Day

Soup Day is a Springhurst tradition. Every October, almost 900 students, staff, and faculty are served Vegetable Soup made from vegetables grown in the Springhurst Outdoor Classroom & Garden. Vegetables are harvested by students. PTSA volunteers chop and prepare vegetables for the soup and serve it to the school community. This educational and fun event is a partnership between the Outdoor Classroom and the PTSA Green Team.

  • November 2024: Pumpkin Smash

Held the week after Halloween and several weeks after the PTSA Pumpkin Fair families bring their pumpkins to smash for composting at Springhurst. Families bring a smashing tool of their choice. Last year over 45 pumpkins were smashed for composting during this event. Compost is used in the Springhurst garden. This educational and fun event is a partnership between the PTSA Green Team and the Springhurst Outdoor Classroom & Garden.

  • February 2025: Clothing Swap

The clothing swap is a community event where kids' clothing is swapped within our community and given a new life. In November 2023 over 370 lbs of clothing were diverted from landfills and kept within our community. The PTSA Green Team partnered with SPRING and Sustainable Dobbs within our community. A sustainable Fashion table also was featured at this event. Leftover clothing from the swap was picked up by BINs.

  • May 2025: Eco Fair

The first annual Eco Fair, presented by the DFPTSA Green Team, will take place in May. This event is focused on sustainability with things like crayon recycling, stuffed animal mending, composting education, clean skincare products and Lego recycling. There will also be fun things like a scavenger hunt, bake sale, raffles, music and more to make this a fun day out that celebrates sustainable practices and provides people with some education on what they can do to help our planet.

  • June 2025: Salad Day

Salad Day is held every June. Students are served fresh produce harvested from the garden served alongside tastings of pesto pasta, herb olive oils with breads and homemade salad dressings. Vegetables are grown and harvested from the Springhurst Outdoor Classroom & Garden by students. PTSA volunteers prepare and serve the salad. This educational and fun event is a partnership between the Springhurst Outdoor Classroom & Garden and the PTSA Green Team.

  • Zero Waste Event Planning & Support

The PTSA Green Team created an event checklist in 2023 to help support the PTSA at large with zero-waste event planning. Zero Waste event planning means that the materials used at the events are reusable, recyclable or compostable as much as possible. The Dobbs Ferry PTSA uses these compostable paper products and cutlery at all events. The PTSA Green team also volunteers whenever possible to support school events with recycling and composting.

A Word About Zero Waste

At Springhurst, reducing waste is taken very seriously.  Zero waste means generating as little waste as possible.  Efforts are made to recycle, divert food from landfills and incineration, and make compost from cafeteria food scraps on-site.  The compost is used in the school’s garden and landscaped areas.  School and PTSA compostable paper products and food scraps are transported to a commercial compost facility, so supporting students with best practices in recycling and waste reduction align with the Dobbs Ferry School District.

It’s the role of the PTSA volunteers to support the school district and all of its students by modeling behavior that advocates for the health and wellness of children and their future as young citizens.
